Euthanasia
Euthanizing or laying a pet to rest is not an easy decision. We are here to discuss options and assist in every way we can during this difficult time.
'How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard' - Winnie the Pooh
Euthanasia, also known as “putting down” or “putting to sleep”, is a difficult and personal decision many pet owners will face as their pet comes to the end of their journey with us.
Why euthanasia?
No matter how long we get to love our pets, we all wish we could have more time before we have to say goodbye. With euthanasia we are able to provide as peaceful an experience as possible for our pets and their families during their final moments.
When is the time right?
Knowing when the time is right is the most difficult decision to make. There are many factors to consider, and it is a highly personal choice that will differ between families. When this time comes, it is always helpful to discuss quality of life concerns and what you want your final walk with your beloved pet to look like with your veterinarian and their team to aid in your decision. We will try our absolute best to make your experience as personal to you and your pet as we can, to honor the life and love you shared together.
What should I expect?
The process of euthanasia is designed to be as peaceful as possible. Once the decision to euthanize has been made, your pet will have a medication administered which will result in deep sedation. During this time your pet is still with you, they will still be able to feel, hear and smell you, they will simply be in a deep state of sleep. This is a wonderful time to take some quiet moments together as you say your goodbyes. Once you are ready, the veterinarian will come in to administer the final injection, usually via IV catheter. You are welcome to stay with your pet until the end, but you can also choose to leave. There is no shame in doing so. Whether staying or choosing to go, it is just as personal a decision as any other along this process. If you decide to leave, please take comfort in knowing their final moments were peaceful and pain free, and one of our team members will have been present with them - they do not go alone.
