Kennel Cough is Irritating, Not Lethal
You’ve returned from vacation where you had peace-of-mind knowing that your beloved pet was kept safe, fed, and entertained at a lovely kennel. Everything seems fine at first, then you notice that Rover just doesn’t want to go for a run and he coughs a bit. No worries… just yet. A few more days pass and Rover is more lethargic. His cough has turned to a hack. You suspect Kennel Cough is the issue and you start to worry.
Many people do not bring their dogs in to see a veterinarian because they believe that Kennel Cough is not serious and only lasts a week or two. While both of these points are usually true, Kennel Cough can be debilitating over the long term.
If your dog’s coughing is dry and hacking and sounds like he is going to vomit or hack something out, then this is putting a big strain on your pet. Their throat is getting irritated and they may vomit up their dinner. Although Rover may want to continue his daily walk/run, it may be wise to limit exercise so he can rest and recover.
Treating Kennel Cough
Antibiotics, in the form of a pill or liquid, are often prescribed to treat Kennel Cough. Your CK Vet will prescribe the best medication for your dog’s weight, age and symptoms.
If you dog is coughing through the night and unable to rest, a cough suppressant may be prescribed. Check with your CK Vet to ensure you use the cough suppressant that is safest for Rover.
Preventing Kennel Cough
There is a vaccine available for Kennel Cough, but it is important to talk to your CK Vet to understand its benefits and what type of dogs are best suited for it.
Finally, although Kennel Cough cannot be transmitted to humans, it is highly contagious to dogs. So maybe limit Rover’s play dates for a few days. Don’t worry, it may be tiring to hear your dog cough and hack all day…but your vacation was worth it, right?
